Each year, 1.5 million breast implants are implanted  both for aesthetic purposes and  for breast reconstructions in patients who have had their breast resected due to breast cancer.

The FDA published a safety communication in 2011 that was updated in 2016, warning that women with breast implants may be at risk,  although very low, of presenting an Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL for its acronym in English.), a rare malignant disease that can present in an effusion (liquid) or  in the capsule that surrounds the implants. There are to date about 296 reported and confirmed cases, and the incidence, cause and predisposing risk factors have not been complete.  determined.

This rare disease is still being studied.  What has been determined is that the condition can start with a rapid growth of one of the breasts because fluid suddenly accumulates internally in the space around the implant. This sudden accumulation of fluid in the breast, which is known as  Late seroma, is one of the most frequent manifestation of ALCL. Although not all late seromas are due to this disease, but only a very low percentage, the fact of presenting a late seroma, it is imperative that you be treated by your doctor and enter the management protocol to determine the cause, and rule out that the box is an ALCL.

One of the causes studied is that chronic inflammation of the implant capsule, for whatever reason, can produce an infiltration of T lymphocytes, cells that can later give rise to Lymphoma.
