The treatment of the arms can be to reduce them, when they have a lot of fat and are very hanging, or to increase them when they are very thin. The most frequent are patients who have very fat arms, or patients who have lost a lot of weight and Their arms have been left with a lot of excessive tissue to the point of looking like two wings. Therefore we will refer more to the reduction of the arms as it is the most frequently requested.
Treatment to reduce the arms can include liposuction only, the reduction of excessive skin, or a combination of both that is most common.
Liposuction can be performed with conventional liposuction equipment, with a vaser equipment that is ultrasound, or with a laser equipment. Any of the modalities seeks to reduce the thickness of the fat in the different compartments of the arm where it is found in excess. The difference is that the modalities that use energy to destroy fat and be able to evacuate it, give a better retraction to the tissues.
When a skin excess is found, in addition to excess fat, after removing the excess fat, it is necessary to remove skin, a procedure known as brachioplasty.
Brachioplasty can be axillary, in which the scar is only located in the axillary crease, or it can be in Z, where the scar extends along the inner side of the arm, from the elbow to the armpit, and then curves towards the posterior border of anterior axillary crease down on lateral thorax.
Each of these technical modalities has a particular indication in the patient. We must evaluate the patient well to see what technique can give us a good result in the patient and discuss the extent and location of the scars. Axillary brachioplasty has the advantage that the scar remains in the axillary fold and is often imperceptible. It is only indicated in patients who have excess skin in the proximal third of the arm.
Z-brachioplasty has the advantage that it allows to remove much more skin, and throughout the forearm, but it also removes excess skin from the lateral axillary region. The disadvantage is the scars, they are very visible, and in general they are clearly seen when the patient raises her arms.
