Chemical peels are treatments that seek to remove the entire surface layer of the skin to smooth it and treat fine wrinkles, blemishes and acne sequelae. Different types of acids are used, which are applied to the face until the desired depth of the burn is achieved depending on the desired result. This procedure must be performed by qualified medical personnel, because the complications of improper application can be cosmetically disastrous.

Peels can also be performed using other technologies, such as mechanical dermabrasion, where a device called a dermabrasion is used to remove the layers of the skin and achieve an effect similar to that obtained with the chemical. This method is more reserved for the treatment of visible scars, rhinophyma and other alterations of the skin of the face that require a more aggressive abrasion.

The chemical peels can be of different types of depth, the superficial ones that can be done with polyglycolic acids or any acid of low concentration and the deep peels that are done with acids of much higher concentration.

How long does the procedure of a deep chemical peel take?

It is a procedure that lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes , it is outpatient, it can be performed in the office or clinic and the patient goes home with certain indications on how to take care of himself.

After healing, which in a deep chemical peel should not be longer than 14 to 18 days, you must use certain products such as sun blockers, to protect yourself and avoid a hyperpigmentation reaction.

This procedure must necessarily be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon.

There are microdermabrasion equipment on the market that have an effect similar to the one mentioned above, but their affectation of the skin is much more superficial, and with more limited results. For this, particles of substances that are applied under pressure with a device on the skin are used, producing a superficial scraping of it. This procedure can be carried out by properly trained technical personnel.

Another way to perform peels is through laser equipment, which also removes the superficial layers of the skin by burning, obtaining the effects of improving wrinkles and skin texture.

The laser is a delicate equipment to use so it must be performed by medical personnel properly trained for this procedure.
